Frequently Asked Questions

Why should organic be my first choice?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

What are the health benefits of organic foods?

While organic foods may not be suitable for everyone's health, they are healthy for some people. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.

Organic food is made without pesticides or herbicides, hormones or genetic engineering. Organic produce is not grown with harmful chemicals that could pose a risk to human health.

Additionally, organic products are less likely to contain additives during processing. Organic products are healthier than those that use additives during processing.

Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.

Although organic farming methods tend to cost more than conventional farming methods, they often yield better results. Organic agriculture encourages soil fertility, biodiversity and biodiversity.

This helps preserve water resources and prevents erosion. Organic farms do not require toxic chemicals to operate. They also use less energy and fuel.

Many people are concerned that organic food is more expensive than regular foods. Prices can vary depending on where you live. Organic apples, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive that conventional apples.

But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.

Do you want to go organic?

It depends on you. Organic food is not for you if you don’t like it.

You can purchase organic food if it is delicious. And since most commercial growers use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic foods are safer for consumers.

Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

What are the most loved organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products will be the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

How can you tell whether food is organic?

Any chef will tell you fresh ingredients are more important than any other ingredient. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.

This holds true for our food. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. It was not treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

Organic farming doesn't have to be difficult. There are plenty of ways to grow them safely.

Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. This means that while it uses fewer resources than conventional methods, it provides the necessary nutrients to sustain life.

Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.

They reduce chemical runoff from waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.

Two types of organic product certification programs exist. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals may be used to identify organic products that meet federal standards.

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They don't contain any genetically modified organisms or irradiated foods. They do not use industrial solvents or sewage effluent in their production. The food's natural environment is protected from contamination during its growth cycle. It does not contain artificial preservatives or additives. There are no hormones and antibiotics used. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains fewer chemicals than nonorganic produce. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. This means you're also consuming less toxic and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies more on soil fertility than chemical fertilizers. This results is healthier soils with higher organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Strong immune systems develop when farm animals are fed only grasses grown without antibiotics or added hormones.
  4. Taste. Conventional fruits and vegetables often taste bland because they're picked at peak ripeness, then shipped long distances to grocery stores. Organic produce tastes richer and sweeter because it was harvested while still unripe.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs and BPA are common in processed foods. Avoid these harmful chemicals by eating whole foods, such as meat, eggs and fish, seeds, legumes, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and beans.
